After the intricate, layered mysteries that came before, I think many of us wondered where Benoit Blanc could go next. The answer, it turns out, is somewhere ridiculously, wonderfully fun. If the last two films were clever puzzles, Wake Up Dead Man is a full-blown party that just happens to have a body lying in the middle of the dance floor.
Let me just say it upfront: this is the most I’ve laughed during a Knives Out movie. From start to finish, the film is an absolute blast, a whirlwind of comedic energy that feels less like a traditional whodunnit and more like a high-stakes farce.
This time, Benoit Blanc (a delightfully befuddled Daniel Craig) finds himself summoned to an exclusive, ultra-modern celebrity retreat in a remote, sun-drenched location. The gathering is a who's who of the hilariously self-absorbed: a tech billionaire with a messiah complex, a self-important method actor, a wellness influencer who speaks only in platitudes, and a faded pop star desperate for a comeback. When the retreat’s enigmatic founder turns up dead, Blanc is faced with a group of suspects who are almost too ridiculous to have committed a serious crime.
The cast is clearly having the time of their lives, and that infectious energy spills off the screen. The script is packed with sharp, witty dialogue and some brilliant slapstick moments that catch you completely off guard. While the previous films focused on skewering old money and new tech, this one sets its sights on celebrity culture and the absurd performance of modern life, and it hits the bullseye every single time.
The mystery itself is still clever, with plenty of twists to keep you guessing. But honestly, the puzzle almost takes a backseat to the sheer joy of watching these characters bounce off each other. Rian Johnson has dialed up the comedy to eleven, making Blanc less of a masterful detective and more of a deeply sane man trying to keep a straight face in a room full of lunatics.
If you’re a purist who wants a dark, gritty murder mystery, this might not be for you. But if you’re looking for a film that is inventive, colourful, and will make you laugh out loud from beginning to end, Wake Up Dead Man is an absolute triumph. It’s pure, unapologetic entertainment.
