Former President Barack Obama recently shared how his time in the White House placed a significant strain on his relationship with Michelle Obama. During a conversation with Hamilton College President Steven Tepper, Obama admitted he’s now focusing on rebuilding their bond.

“I was in a deep deficit with my wife,” Obama, 63, stated, highlighting how political commitments affected their personal life. “So I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by occasionally doing fun things.”

Reflecting on the Past and Making Amends

This isn’t the first time Obama has addressed the personal costs of his presidency. In a 2023 interview with CBS Mornings, he said, “It sure helps to be out of the White House and to have a little more time with her.”

In his 2020 memoir A Promised Land, Obama recalled his early connection with Michelle: “I was smitten almost from the second I saw her.”

The Obamas married in 1992 after meeting at a law firm in Chicago in the late 1980s. They have two daughters, Sasha and Malia, and have often spoken publicly about the highs and lows of their journey together.

Michelle Obama Speaks About Difficult Years

Michelle Obama has also been candid about the challenges in their marriage. In a 2022 Revolt TV interview, she admitted, “There were 10 years where I couldn’t stand my husband,” particularly during the early parenting years and Barack’s rise in politics.

In her 2018 memoir Becoming, Michelle revealed that the couple even sought marriage counseling. “There were times I wished things were different,” she wrote. “But I don’t think I ever thought, ‘I’m just checking out of this.’”

Speculation and Public Appearances

Rumors about trouble in their marriage—including baseless claims linking Barack Obama to actress Jennifer Aniston—have circulated in recent years. Speculation intensified when Michelle did not accompany Barack to certain high-profile events, such as former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral or Donald Trump’s inauguration.

However, the Obamas have continued to present a strong front. They often share affectionate photos and messages on social media, especially on holidays like Valentine’s Day, reinforcing their continued partnership.
