Suspense Crime,Digital Desk: Bank Holiday: If you are planning to settle your bank work next week, then this news is for you. On May 1, which is Thursday, in many parts of the country banks will remain closed. Now the question is, if there is no weekend on May 1, then why will the banks remain closed?

According to the list of holidays of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) suggests a rest day on May 1, on account of Maharashtra Day and Labor Day, hence, banks will remain closed.

As per the bank holiday calendar of the RBI, branches in Belapur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram will also observe a holiday on 1st May. This means that if you reside in these towns and have some urgent work pending with the bank, you must attend to it right away.

Why is it celebrated?

In India May 1 is a public holiday for many organizations, it’s the Maharashtra Day. The day holds importance because once, on May 1 in the year 1960 Bombai state had subdivision forming Maharashtra and Gujarat as two individual states. Subsequent to the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement, state of Maharashtra was formed for Marathi speaking population.

Labor Day is also celebrated on the 1st of May each year. This day is celebrated to appreciate the efforts of people globally as well as the labor movement. Workers put forth monumental efforts to gain the respect and rights they deserved, along with equal payment and safe working conditions. It is in respect and appreciation of these efforts that we celebrate ‘Labor Day’.

In May, banks will be closed for 8 days.

The Reserve Bank of India makes specific remarks on holidays pertaining to post office savings bank branches in India. Bank holidays can be divided into two categories, First- holidays under Negotiable Instrument Act and second- holiday due to closure of bank account. month of May will see a total of 8 bank holidays. In addition to the national and state holidays, it includes holidays on Sundays, and on every second and fourth Saturday of the month.
