Cricket Australia has released its list of centrally contracted men's players for the 2025-26 season, featuring 23 names. Among them are three new inclusions: Sam Konstas, Matthew Kuhnemann, and Beau Webster. Each of the newcomers earned their spot with impressive performances during the recent season.
Kuhnemann’s Consistency in Tests Pays Off
Left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has been awarded a central contract following his strong performances, especially in Australia's historic Test series win in Sri Lanka. With 16 wickets in just two Tests, Kuhnemann was named Player of the Series and has since claimed 35 wickets in just five red-ball games.
Konstas Impresses in Border-Gavaskar Trophy Debut
Teenage opener Sam Konstas earned praise for his confident debut during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against India. Thrust into the starting lineup mid-series, the 19-year-old scored a crucial 60 on debut, helping shift the momentum toward Australia. Though his scores dipped afterward, his potential has been recognized with a national contract.
All-Round Promise Shown by Beau Webster
Beau Webster also made his Test debut during the India series. He scored a half-century in his first appearance and contributed effectively with the ball. His versatility and fielding ability provide Australia with a well-rounded option, especially valuable in upcoming Test assignments.
Selectors Back Youth and Experience
George Bailey, Chair of Selectors for Australia’s men's team, commended the three new additions and emphasized the squad’s blend of experience and emerging talent.
"Matt was outstanding in Sri Lanka and will be key in the next 18 months."
"Beau adds depth and balance with bat, ball, and fielding."
"Sam shows exciting potential and will grow further at domestic and international levels."
Regular Stars Retain Spots Amid Returnees
Established players like Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Nathan Lyon, and Usman Khawaja remain in the mix. Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green, both recovering from injuries, have also retained their contracts. Their return creates healthy competition ahead of major tournaments like the World Test Championship and tours of the West Indies.
