The ICC has taken big action against Sri Lankan cricket team player Praveen Jayawickrama and has banned him from all forms of cricket for one year. Out of which six months will be suspended. This ban was imposed on him for violating the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code and he admitted to violating Article 2.4.7 of the code and accepted all the charges.
The matter is related to the Lanka Premier League.
The charges relate to international cricket and the Lanka Premier League. The ICC acted by Articles 1.7.4.1 and 1.8.1 of the Code in its agreement with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Article 2.4.7 includes obstructing or delaying any investigation conducted by the ACU, including by concealing, tampering with, or destroying any document or other information that may be relevant to that investigation or lead to the discovery of evidence. He was found guilty of this.
Played all three formats for Sri Lanka
Praveen Jayawickrama made his debut for Sri Lanka in all three formats in the year 2021. Praveen won the match for the Lankan team by taking 11 wickets on his debut. He also received the Player of the Match award for his excellent performance in the Test match against Bangladesh. He took 25 wickets in a total of 5 Test matches for Lanka. He played his last Test in the year 2022 and since then he has been out of the team.
Took more than 120 wickets in first-class matches
Praveen Jayawickrama has taken 5 wickets in 5 ODIs and 2 wickets in 5 T20 International matches. Apart from this, he has 120 wickets in his name in 33 first-class matches. Jayawickrama has taken 60 wickets in the list. At the age of 26, he was banned by the ICC due to corruption. This has also put his career in danger.
