A career that started with a bang for Mumbai Indians. In his very first game for the franchise, Kumar single handedly decimated KKR’s batting lineup picking 4 wickets and conceding only 24 runs in 3 overs, which propelled him into the record books as the first Indian fast bowler to claim four wickets on IPL debut. Ashwani made his first impression in the league by taking Ajinkya Rahane’s wicket first ball.
He achieved the feat by dismissing Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, and Manish Pandey. Ashwani was the fifth bowler in IPL history to take 4 wickets in his debut match alongside Alzaari Joseph (6/12, Mumbai Indians), Andrew Tye (5/17, Gujarat Lions), and Shoaib Akhtar (4/11, Kolkata Knight Riders).
Prior to his IPL debut, Ashwani Kumar played 4 senior T20 matches, 2 Ranji matches, and 4 List A games. He has consistently put up good numbers but this was first time in his cricketing career Ashwani Kumar claimed four wickets in a match. Previously the best he had done was 3/37 in List A and 1/19 in T20s.
