Suspense crime, Digital Desk : The Squid Game universe might be expanding in a massive way, with a new report suggesting that Netflix is developing an American version of the global phenomenon with some of Hollywood's biggest names attached.
According to a scoop from well-known Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider, Netflix is in the early stages of creating an English-language adaptation of the South Korean survival drama. The most electrifying part of the rumor is who is reportedly involved: two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett is being considered for a starring role, and acclaimed director David Fincher is being courted to direct and produce the series.
While this remains an unconfirmed rumor, the combination makes perfect sense. Fincher has a long and successful partnership with Netflix, having helmed critically acclaimed projects for the streamer like Mindhunter, Mank, and The Killer. Attaching a director of his caliber would instantly lend prestige and a distinct visual style to the high-concept series.
Similarly, landing a powerhouse actress like Cate Blanchett would signal that Netflix is treating the American adaptation as a top-tier, A-list production.
This potential remake would be separate from the original Korean series, which is set to return for its highly anticipated second season. Netflix has already proven its commitment to expanding the Squid Game IP with its successful reality competition show, Squid Game: The Challenge. An American narrative series would be the next logical step in building a global franchise.
As of now, Netflix has not officially confirmed the project or any of the rumored attachments. However, the prospect of a Fincher-directed, Blanchett-starring Squid Game is already generating massive excitement among fans.
