This step has been taken by the government at a time when the situation in Manipur remains unstable due to protests and violence after the bodies of women and children were recovered. Manipur has been battling ethnic conflict since May last year.
Miscreants set fire to BJP MLA’s house.
Officials said that angry mobs set on fire the residences of three more BJP MLAs and one Congress MLA in different districts of Imphal Valley in Manipur. They said that the protesters also tried to storm the ancestral house of state Chief Minister N Biren Singh. However, the police stopped them.
Violent protest in Imphal on Saturday
An indefinite curfew was imposed in the Imphal valley on Saturday as protesters turned violent in various parts of the city after the bodies of three women and three children were found in the Jiribam district. The angry mob also attacked the residences of three state ministers and six MLAs on Saturday.
The houses of these MLAs were set on fire.
According to officials, protesters set ablaze the houses of Public Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam in Ningthoukhong, Hianglam BJP MLA Y Radheshyam in Langmeidong market, BJP MLA Paonam Brojen from Wangjing Tentha in Thoubal district and Congress MLA Lokeshwar from Khundrakpam in Imphal East district.
House property was also vandalized.
Police officials said that the angry mob attacked the residential premises of the MLAs, vandalized the property, and set the houses on fire. However, the MLAs and their family members were not present at home during this time.
Instructions to security forces to take necessary steps
The Union Home Ministry on Saturday said all security forces deployed in Manipur have been directed to take necessary steps to restore order and peace in the state, where the situation has remained fragile for the past few days.
More than 200 people have died in the violence so far.
Given the delicate situation, the Center on Thursday re-imposed the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in six police station areas of the state, including violence-hit Jiribam. More than 200 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between the Meitei community living in the Imphal valley and the Kuki-Jo community living in the adjacent hills.
