Suspense crime, Digital Desk : In Indian households, air coolers are one of the most used appliances for the purpose of cooling during summers. The heat and humidity tends to get a bit twitchy to the nerves. However, if they are mismanaged  and not properly maintained, these appliances can become breeding sites for mosquitoes which can lead to serious illnesses like dengue and malaria.

Do Mosquitoes Really Breed in Coolers?

Absolutely yes they do. If we look at the mosquito problem critically, stagnant water sitting in the tank of a cooler is very appealing to mosquitoes especially:

Aedes aegypti (carrier of dengue)

Female Anopheles (carrier of malaria)

These species of mosquitos are known to breed in calm water. This put the entire family at risk if the mosquitoes eventually spread throughout the house.

How to Keep Mosquitoes Out of Your Air Cooler

1. Change the Water Frequently  
Adjust the cooler tank water on a 2-3 day schedule.

In order to slow down the multiplying process of mosquitoes, one must remove stagnant water to keep changing the water regularly.

2. Clean the Cooler Tank  
 Keep scrubbing both the exterior and interior of the tank. Remove all forms of algae and dirt using a brush. Afterwards use mild disinfectants like bleach phenyl and rinse thoroughly.

After removing stagnant water, one cleaning the inside of the tank scrubbing algae along with dirt would assist achieve clean water.

3. Dry the Cooler When Not in Use  

If you plan on not using a specific cooler for a short period of time, remove the tank completely and dry it ventilated area.

A dry cooler leaves no room for mosquitoes to reproduce.

4. Maintain Proper Hygiene in the Outer Environment

Avoid any accumulation of water near the cooler’s stand or on the floor.

Make it a habit to wipe the area as it aids in avoiding water collection.

5. Put In Repellent In The Water

Put in some repelling tablets or liquid designed for coolers.

Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to maintain safety and effectiveness.

6. Inspect The Water Drain

Check if the water drainage system functions properly.

Water must not gather around the outlet as well as the base.

7. Perform Maintenance On The Cooler Pads

In addition to hiding, mosquitoes can also breed in cooler pads soaked with water.

Khus or honeycomb pads should be cleaned regularly and replaced when they become dirty or old.
