The highly anticipated period drama Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, was finally released on February 14, 2025. Now, let’s take a look at how much the film earned on its opening day.

Directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava tells the compelling story of Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, portrayed by Vicky Kaushal.

Box Office Collection and Occupancy

According to reports from Sacnilk, the film had an impressive start, earning Rs 31 crore net across all languages in India on its first day.

Sacnilk data also shows that occupancy in cinema halls increased throughout the day. The film opened with 30.51% occupancy in morning shows, followed by 34.50% in the afternoon. The numbers further grew in the evening to 40.51%, peaking at a remarkable 62.55% during night screenings.

Prior to its release, Chhaava had already sold close to 5 lakh tickets in advance booking for its opening day, contributing significantly to its successful debut.

Record-Breaking Opener for Vicky Kaushal

With its opening day collection, Chhaava has become Vicky Kaushal’s highest-grossing opener, surpassing the Rs 8.20 crore debut of Uri: The Surgical Strike. Additionally, it holds the title of the biggest opening film of 2025, overtaking Akshay Kumar’s Sky Force, which had earned Rs 15.30 crore on its first day last month.

Star Cast and Production Details

Directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava features Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, with Rashmika Mandanna playing Maharani Yesubai and Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb. The ensemble cast also includes Diana Penty, Ashutosh Rana, and Divya Dutta. The film was produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films and officially hit cinemas on February 14, 2025.

Critical Reception

A review from Moneycontrol.com praised Kaushal’s performance, stating, “Vicky Kaushal embodies the might and valour of Sambhaji Maharaj. He displays a range of emotions, from fierce determination in battle to a touching tenderness when he witnesses a mother’s love for her young son (which he longs for). One of the film’s most iconic moments is the intense fight scene between Sambhaji and a lion, a testament to his bravery in the opening scenes.”

Online Piracy Threatens Box Office Performance

Despite its strong box office debut, Chhaava faced a major setback due to online piracy. Reports suggest that the film was leaked online just hours after its release.

Various sources claim that the full movie, which runs for two hours and thirty-five minutes, is now accessible through search engines and has been uploaded on multiple piracy websites. These unauthorized copies are available in multiple resolutions, including 1080p, 720p, 480p, 360p, and HD quality, potentially impacting its earnings.

With a production budget of approximately Rs 110 crore, the film's revenue may be significantly affected as some viewers opt for pirated versions rather than watching it in theaters.

Despite the piracy concerns, Chhaava has made an impressive start at the box office and continues to receive praise from audiences and critics alike. The coming days will determine how the film performs in the long run.
