Seoul: The anti-corruption agency could not detain South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol from his residence. Today, on Friday, the agency reached the President's residence to detain him in the impeachment case. But after hours of dramatic developments there, it had to return back. The agency said that it failed to detain President Yoon even after hours of deadlock at his residence.
Let us tell you that South Korea's anti-corruption agency sent investigators to Seoul on Friday to serve a warrant to detain the country's President Yun Suk Yeol, who is facing impeachment, where hundreds of supporters have gathered at Yun's residence. Investigators from the office, which investigates corruption allegations against high-ranking officials, were seen leaving their headquarters in the city of Gwacheon early in the morning.
The court had issued a warrant for his arrest
It is noteworthy that a South Korean court recently issued a warrant to detain Yoon Suk Yeol and search his office. The investigating agency said in a statement that the Seoul Western District Court issued a warrant to detain Yoon Suk Yeol and search the presidential office in connection with the short-term martial law imposed earlier this month. The agency said it was investigating whether the short-term martial law imposed by Yoon on December 3 was akin to rebellion.
Thousands of policemen deployed at President's residence
Thousands of police have been deployed around Yoon's residence. There have been no reports of clashes between police and protesters. If Yoon is detained, the anti-corruption agency will have 48 hours to investigate. After this, it will either have to request a warrant for his formal arrest or release him. Yoon's defense minister, police chief and several top military commanders have already been arrested for their alleged role in imposing martial law.
Yoon's lawyer called the warrant illegal
Yoon Suk Yeol's lawyer, Yoon Kap-kyun, called the warrant illegal. Yoon has previously deferred several requests by the investigative team and state prosecutors to appear for questioning and has also obstructed searches of his offices. The impeachment motion brought against President Yoon Suk Yeol in the National Assembly for ordering the imposition of short-lived martial law in South Korea was passed on December 14. After this, Yoon's powers as president were suspended until the Constitutional Court decides whether to remove him from office or restore his powers.
