Dhawan unlikely to make a comeback in T20 World Cup Indian team: Sunil Gavaskar

New Delhi, 21 June (H.S.). Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes that veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan is unlikely to make a comeback in the T20 World Cup Indian team.

Dhawan has already played two T20 World Cups for India in 2014 and 2016 and good form in this year’s IPL raised his chances of selection in the team but the recent five-match series against South Africa. For he was ignored, the selectors instead picked newcomers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan in the squad.

Dhawan also missed out on selection for the upcoming white-ball tour of the United Kingdom, which begins with two matches against Ireland later this month.

While concerns remain over the fitness of first-choice opener Rahul, Gavaskar does not expect Dhawan to make it to the third T20 World Cup in October.

Gavaskar told Star Sports, “No, I do not see his name. If he had to be in the T20 World Cup squad, he would have been in the squad for the two T20I series against Ireland. A lot of people have gone to England and he could have been in this team. If he is not in this team, then according to me he is not in the T20 World Cup squad.”

Gaikwad and Kishan cemented their bid for the World Cup with half-centuries during the recently concluded series against South Africa. Kishan in particular impressed everyone by scoring a total of 206 runs at an average of over 40.

But Gavaskar has no doubt that Rohit and Rahul will be India’s best opening combination in Australia.

“My opening combination will be KL Rahul if he is fit, and Rohit Sharma is with him,” Gavaskar said.

The T20 World Cup will begin on October 16, with India’s first match against Pakistan on October 23 at the MCG.
