The word Durga in Sanskrit means undefeated and Ashtami means the eighth day. On this Ashtami day, Goddess Durga won victory by slaying the demon Mahishasura. According to the legend, Goddess Durga took the form of red color on this day. Hence this day is also known as Goddess Bhadrakali. By killing the demon on this day, the goddess freed the entire universe from fear.

In the month of Shravan, Shukla Paksha is starting from Durgashtami date on 5th August at 5:06 am. So Ashtami will end on 6th August at 3:56 am. According to the date of rise, Durgashtami will be celebrated on 5th August.

To perform the puja, first the place of worship should be cleaned and purified with Gangajal. Place a red cloth in the plate and place an idol or photo of Goddess Durga on it. After this, offer red cloth and jewelery to the goddess. In front of the goddess, incense, lamp and kunku, akshada and red flowers, camphor etc. should be worshiped properly. After that offer sweets and fruits as prasad. Durga Chalisa should be recited during the puja. After the worship is completed, the aarti of Goddess Durga should be performed.
