The controversy surrounding content creator Ranveer Allahbadia has now drawn the attention of Parliament, with eight Members of Parliament (MPs) raising concerns over controversial content on digital platforms. During a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology and Communications on February 13, MPs discussed the need for stricter regulations to prevent the spread of immoral and offensive content.

Following the meeting, the committee sent a formal communication to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), requesting an official report by February 17 outlining possible amendments to media laws.

Government Seeks Amendments to Clamp Down on Controversial Content

The letter addressed to MIB Secretary Sanjay Jaju stated:

"In light of the recent controversy generated by the vulgar remarks of YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia in a YouTube short, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is requested to provide a brief note regarding the amendments required in all the laws (Acts, Codes, Guidelines, etc.) related to media due to the emergence of new forms of technology and media platforms."

The committee is reviewing the ‘Implementation of Laws Related to All Forms of Media’, with a specific focus on strengthening legal measures to regulate digital platforms and social media content.

What Led to the Controversy?

Ranveer Allahbadia, better known as BeerBiceps, is facing legal scrutiny after making controversial remarks on comedian Samay Raina's show, India’s Got Talent. His comments sparked widespread backlash, leading to calls for stricter regulation of content creators and digital influencers.

Parliamentary Outrage and Call for Stronger Regulations

During the meeting, chaired by Nishikant Dubey, several MPs expressed strong disapproval of such content. According to sources:

"All the MPs were outraged," said an insider. "There was a call for stricter implementation of existing laws to deter the spread of immoral content."
Some MPs pushed for stronger enforcement of the Information Technology Act and the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.
Others argued for new legislation to proactively regulate digital content, rather than taking action only after controversies arise.

"This is not just about Ranveer Allahbadia," another source noted. "We need proactive measures to deter such content rather than reacting after controversies erupt."

Upcoming Discussions on Digital Content Regulations

The Parliamentary Committee is set to hold another key meeting with officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The focus will be on developing a comprehensive regulatory framework to monitor and control digital content across various platforms.

As digital media continues to evolve, the Indian government is now under increasing pressure to tighten its grip on social media platforms, influencers, and online content creators to ensure responsible content creation while maintaining freedom of expression within constitutional limits.
