Just hours after being sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, along with her six cabinet colleagues, approved the Centre’s ambitious Ayushman Bharat scheme, according to reports from News18. Additionally, the cabinet decided to table the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports in the Assembly.
A Proactive Start
The newly appointed CM wasted no time and assumed charge within hours of taking the oath on Thursday. Her first day in office included attending the Yamuna Aarti, allocating portfolios to her cabinet members, and chairing her maiden cabinet meeting.
Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure
According to multiple media sources, the health department is set to unveil a plan to upgrade existing Mohalla Clinics into Urban Arogya Ayushman Mandirs under the Ayushman Bharat Infrastructure Mission (PM-BHIM). The goal is to establish 1,139 such centers, which includes converting 553 existing Mohalla Clinics and constructing 413 new ones.
Ayushman Bharat: A Holistic Healthcare Initiative
The BJP-led Ayushman Bharat initiative aims to provide comprehensive healthcare, covering preventive, curative, and palliative aspects. This includes Health and Wellness Centers (HWCs) at the grassroots level and financial aid for medical treatments at both public and private healthcare institutions.
The two-pronged strategy of Ayushman Bharat includes:
Establishing 150,000 HWCs across the country to ensure accessible primary care. These centers focus on maternal, child, and non-communicable disease care while offering free essential medicines and diagnostics. The first HWC was inaugurated by the Prime Minister in Jangla, Bijapur, Chhattisgarh, on April 14, 2018.
Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), which provides financial coverage for secondary and tertiary healthcare for underprivileged families. HWCs play a key role in raising awareness about PMJAY, conducting screenings for non-communicable diseases, and monitoring patients after hospitalization.
With these developments, the Delhi government, under CM Rekha Gupta’s leadership, is set to expand healthcare access while ensuring effective governance through Ayushman Bharat implementation.
