Guwahati, 25 January (HS). The 74th Republic Day was celebrated on Thursday at the sports ground of Veterinary College, Khanapara, Guwahati. Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma unfurled the national tricolor at the main function of the state. Also took salute of the parade of Central Paramilitary Force, Police, NCC, NSS. During this cultural programs were organized and tableaux were also taken out.

In his address, the Chief Minister saluted all the patriots, including the freedom fighters and the makers of the Constitution. Also made many announcements. Sarma said that if talks are held with the insurgent outfit ULFA (Independent), Assam would become an island of peace. He said that the dream of one lakh jobs will be fulfilled in a few months. The Chief Minister announced Rs 300 crore for the development of Kamakhya Dham. He also talked about adopting a special plan by the government in 2023 to eradicate poverty in the state.

Sarma said that from April this year, the government has set a target of giving Rs 1200 instead of Rs 300 to widow women. The pension of Divyang will be increased to Rs 1,250. The Chief Minister said that child marriage will have to be stopped in the next three years. Child marriage and forcing children to give birth after child marriage would be dangerous. Such a person will get severe punishment. Along with this, the Chief Minister shared many other important things.

Republic Day was celebrated with enthusiasm in other parts of the state as well. Ceremonies were held. Ministers of the Government of Assam also hoisted the national flag in different districts.
