A joint opposition meeting was held to decide the name of the presidential candidate. After this meeting, Yashwant Sinha’s name has been announced as the opposition candidate for the post of President. The meeting was attended by 15 party leaders including Jairam Ramesh, Randeep Surjewala and Sitaram Yechury. Yashwant Sinha has been the Union Finance Minister twice, first in the government of Chandrashekhar and the first time in the government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He has also been the foreign minister in the Vajpayee government.
Before attending the meeting, TMC leader Yashwant Sinha tweeted that he was leaving TMC for a bigger national cause. I would like to thank Mamata Banerjee for the support and respect she has received. He said that it is time to break away from the party and work for a bigger cause.
Significantly, the BJP has called a meeting of the parliamentary party for the presidential candidate on Tuesday evening. Prime Minister Modi can also be present in the meeting. Earlier, the BJP had tasked party president JP Nadda and Rajnath Singh to reach an agreement.
