Show cause notice to Gujarat University
Ahmedabad University Grants Commission has sent a show cause notice to Gujarat University as to why its deemed university status should not be withdrawn. Against which Gujarat University has filed an application in the High Court. Following the High Court’s notice, the UGC replied that the move was in the best interest of the university and to uphold the principles of Mahatma Gandhi. UGC is yet to get a reply from the university, UGC has not yet taken any decision against the university on the issue of violation of rules, the matter is under consideration before the UGC.
In these circumstances the application made by Gujarat University to the High Court is very early. The cancellation of the UGC’s show cause notice will hamper the university’s right to investigate and prosecute cases of financial irregularities. Gujarat University was given deemed university status in 1963. At this time, it has been stipulated that the Gujarat Vidyapeeth Trust shall have to register separately for the Institute as a Trust or Society under the relevant Acts.
For the purpose of separating Gujarat Vidyapeeth Trust and Gujarat Vidyapeeth Deemed University, it has been given the status of Deemed University. However, this condition of UGC has been completely ignored by Gujarat University. It is not registered as a society. The details of the case have been filed by a whistleblower alleging that there are massive financial irregularities going on in Gujarat University. Which was supported by the UGC in the investigation. UGC has sent show cause notices to Gujarat University for 22 serious financial irregularities and violation of UGC norms. Against which Gujarat University has filed an application in the High Court. In which the High Court has sent a notice to the Central Government and the UGC.
