West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently stirred controversy with her comments on Mahakumbh, referring to it as "Mrityu Kumbh" (Death Kumbh). Now, she has once again made a statement that has drawn sharp criticism. This time, she questioned the claim that Mahakumbh is being organized in Prayagraj after 144 years.
"Kumbh Is Not Happening After 144 Years..."
Speaking on the matter, Mamata Banerjee said, "Mahakumbh is held every 12 years. The claim that it is happening after 144 years is completely false. As far as I know, the last Mahakumbh took place in 2014. So, saying that it is being held after 144 years is misleading."
BJP Hits Back
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wasted no time in responding to Mamata Banerjee’s remarks. The party accused her of pushing an “anti-Hindu political agenda” through selective statements. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticized her, stating, "Her repeated misleading statements appear to be politically motivated. This is an attempt to demean and weaken the sacred events of Sanatan Dharma, influenced by her appeasement politics."
Calling Maha Kumbh ‘Mrityu Kumbh’
BJP leader and actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty also condemned Mamata Banerjee’s remarks. He said, "What she is saying is absolutely wrong. Over 70 crore people have come here to take a holy dip. Is that wrong? The world has witnessed the power of Sanatan Dharma."
Mamata Banerjee had earlier sparked outrage on January 29, 2025, when she referred to Maha Kumbh as "Mrityu Kumbh". Her statement came after a tragic stampede during the ritual bath, which led to multiple deaths. At the time, she had slammed the government for poor planning, stating, "This is not Maha Kumbh; this is Mrityu Kumbh. I respect Maha Kumbh and Ganga Mata, but there is no proper planning. How many lives have been lost so far?"
Her latest remarks have once again intensified the political debate around Mahakumbh, with BJP leaders accusing her of disrespecting Hindu traditions.
