The state of security has been put into doubt after multiple bombs went off on three idle buses in Israel’s central district on a Thursday. In as much it was an unpleasant series of events, no one was hurt.
General Overview of the Incident
During the blasting, Bat Yam, a region close to Tel-Aviv, experienced the explosions while the buses were in the process of being parked for the day. Police tracked down two other active buses that also contained explosives but they had been detonated without the timer going off. As soon as the explosion took place, A BOMB with a timer on it went off. Channel 13’s TV reported that the bombs were identical and that Aharoni, an Israeli police spokesman, stated that they will be defused by the bomb squads. The situation was rather problematic as it was a day where bombs were targeting Israel and they were fond of showing the bodies of four dreaded Gaza hostages from the cease fire pact with Hamas. In the attempt for recalling Israeli history, the blasts have reminded people of a more modern style bombing, the ones that were done back in the day on the Palestine uprising. It is however accepted these days as rare.
Attempt to solve the case
Various Israeli powers, including the internal security force Shin Bet, have started the investigation, along with other authorities. Haim Sargrof, a police spokesman stated that the sole purpose of the officials are figuring out whether there was a primary suspect in the planting of explosives, or whether multiple people are involved. He further stated that while Sargrof claimed that the explosives used in the attack are similar with the ones used in the West Bank, no additional information could be offered.
Response from Authorities and Public Transport
In regards to the explosions, Ofir Karni, the manager of the bus services, instructed that an internal audit be conducted to check the well being of all employees and safety of the buses before leaving for work. Bat Yam’s Mayor Tzvika Brot was rather shocked and termed it as a ‘miracle’ when he found out that nobody was injured in the case and made statements that public schooling and public transport shall remain functioning as they did previously.
Netanyahu's office in Israel stated that the prime minister was getting directions from his military secretary during the development of the events.
Possible Links to Palestinian Militants
On Telegram, a message was posted with the caption that read: “We shall always avenge our martyrs rest assured, as long as the occupation is on our lands.” It was posted by a faction that claims to represent the Tulkarem Brigade which is a part of Hamas’s armed division and did not accept responsibility for the attack.
Since the ceasefire on January 19, Gaza has been more militarized and Israel has increased its military actions against Tulkarem and its refugee camps. The Israeli army out of retribution for the bus explosions has poured further restrictions onto the Palestinians, bordering portions of the west bank.
Heightened Security and Ongoing Tensions
The presence of Palestinian militants poses a considerable threat to Israel and the recent attack serves a clear reminder for the country to be on high alert at all times.
While the investigation is ongoing, authorities in Israel are taking extra precaution to control any future incidents while advising the citizens to be alert and watchful.
