A massive fire tragically occurred in the night near Jhunsi Chhatnag Ghat, Nageshwar Ghat at sector no 22 of Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj leaving many tents burnt. People got frightened but there were no loss of lives as the authorities assured the public.

Namboodiris fury; Fire erupts at Mahakumbh Mela

Thereafter, an official from the UP Fire Department known as Pramod Sharma was quoted saying:

It was established that fire erupted in 15 tarpaulin tin-shed tents that is within the Chhatnag Ghat Police Station area. Consequently, there was quick intervention and the fire was tamed shortly. In essence, the SDM agreed with the fact that these were some of the unauthorized tents. The situation is comparatively normal and there is indeed no loss of life.

Stampede on Mauni Amavasya: 30 Dead, Over 60 Injured

An unfortunate incident occurred at Sangam area on Mauni Amavasya which, resulted in stampede in the early morning when millions of devotees thronged the river for a holy bath. This caused a stampede that led to the killing of 30 persons and several others were injured over 60.

What Led to the Tragedy?

The stampede happened between 1 and 2 in the morning due to overcrowding that led to the setting up of barriers to fall.
Individuals rushed in the front, which enticed a crush of people.
DIG Vaibhav Krishna attested the death figures and added that more than 90 injured were shifted to various hospitals out of them 30 died.

Among the deceased:

25 victims have been identified, including:

4 from Karnataka
1 each from Assam and Gujarat
Among them, 36 people are still receiving medical treatments and They have been also reunited with their close ones.

Eyewitness Accounts: Panic and Desperation

Survivors described the horrifying moments:

One of Kavita’s interviews involved Sarojini, a lady from Karnataka who is an ardent devotee of Lord Sri Krishna, she vividly narrated the ordeal as follows:

On that time I was among a group of nine individuals and I can recall we were shoved from every angle. Perhaps, there was no way to escape and many of the people succumbed to it.

An afflicted man from Madhya Pradesh told how his mother has been injured and takene to the hospital.
A poor couple from Meghalaya was found traumatized, to the extreme that they could hardly walk after the horrible episode.
Thus, a parent, who had her child hurt, said:

They did not attend to our cries and continued as we fumbled. Some of them even laughed as they continued to pressure themselves through.”

Government Response: Judicial Probe Ordered

Prime minister Narendra Modi described this as very sad and assured to help the administration in any way possible.
The UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also ordered a judicial probe and announced to constitute a judicial commission constituting three members to identify the cause behind the disaster.
