Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on a visit to the United States, where he is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump. A series of high-level discussions on crucial defense agreements are underway, with expectations of major deals being signed between the two nations. Among the key agreements under consideration are the co-production of the Striker Combat Vehicle and Fighter Jet Engine, marking a significant step in defense collaboration.
India is also exploring the purchase of mounted anti-tank guided missile systems and several hundred Striker vehicles from the US. Meanwhile, these developments have caused concern in Pakistan, as military experts suggest that such agreements will significantly enhance India's defense capabilities.
Trump’s Earlier Indications on Military Deals
India and the US have been deepening their defense cooperation, with President Donald Trump previously signaling that India will increase its military purchases from the US. In this context, India has shown keen interest in co-producing Infantry Combat Vehicle Striker, which has already undergone high-altitude testing by the Indian Army.
Additionally, discussions are ongoing for the license manufacturing of the General Electric F-414 jet engine in India. Another crucial topic under negotiation is the delayed delivery of the F-404 engine for India's Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk1A, which remains a concern for Indian defense officials.
Expanding Defense Production Collaboration
According to media sources, multiple high-level meetings have taken place between Indian and US defense officials to enhance military production collaboration. Reports suggest that representatives from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will soon engage in discussions with US officials and the aerospace division of General Electric. The primary agenda includes finalizing the manufacturing process of the GE-414 engine by March.
Additionally, talks on the co-production of Striker vehicles remain a priority, with expectations of significant progress during Modi’s US visit.
Boosting India's Defense Readiness
Defense Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar recently addressed the matter, confirming that India is moving swiftly with its proposed defense transactions with the US. However, he refrained from revealing further details.
Experts believe that these defense agreements will bolster India’s military preparedness, reinforcing its position in regional security dynamics.
Beyond Defense: Strengthening US-India Trade Ties
India's expanding trade relations with the US extend beyond defense deals. Speculation is growing over a major trade agreement between the two countries. The bilateral trade volume between India and the US has reached $129.2 billion in 2024.
However, uncertainties surrounding the Trump administration’s trade policies and tariffs could present challenges in negotiations. Despite this, experts remain optimistic that both nations will reach an agreement on a landmark trade deal.
