New Delhi – The Indian Railways has announced financial compensation for the victims of the tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night, which resulted in at least 18 fatalities and left more than a dozen injured.
According to an official statement, the families of the deceased will receive ₹10 lakh each, while those with serious injuries will be granted ₹2.5 lakh. Passengers who suffered minor injuries will be compensated with ₹1 lakh.
The incident took place on platforms 14 and 15, where thousands of passengers had gathered to board trains to Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, for the Maha Kumbh Mela. Eyewitnesses and officials suggest that overcrowding, confusion over platform changes, and last-minute announcements may have contributed to the chaos.
Delhi Police has launched an investigation, reviewing CCTV footage to ascertain the exact cause of the tragedy.
“Our main objective is to determine what triggered the stampede. We are analyzing CCTV recordings, platform announcements, and the crowd management measures in place at that time,” said a senior police official.
DCP Railways KPS Malhotra acknowledged that while authorities had anticipated a surge in passengers, they were unable to manage the overwhelming crowd. “It unfolded within moments. A fact-finding inquiry will be conducted by the Railways to determine the precise cause of the incident,” he stated.
In response to the tragedy, additional security personnel have been deployed at the railway station and hospitals treating the injured. Indian Railways has assured that necessary corrective measures will be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future.
