The Gujarat Titans, who won the IPL title in their debut season in 2022, are set to undergo a major ownership change before IPL 2025. Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group is on the verge of acquiring a 67% stake in the franchise from CVC Capital Partners (Irelia Company Private Limited). CVC Capital had purchased the team in 2021.

Torrent Group Awaits BCCI Approval

The deal is yet to receive approval from the IPL Governing Council. Torrent Group is waiting for the green signal to take over the majority stake. The approval is expected before the IPL 2025 season, which is scheduled to begin on March 21, 2025.

This change in ownership follows another major shift within the franchise. In 2024, Gujarat Titans changed their captain when Hardik Pandya rejoined Mumbai Indians after leading GT to its first title. Now, just a year later, the team is set to have a new owner as well.

CVC Capital’s Lock-In Period Ends in 2025

A source from the IPL ecosystem, speaking to PTI on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Torrent Group is in advanced talks to acquire the two-thirds stake (67%). The lock-in period for CVC Capital as the sole owner will expire in February 2025, after which they can officially sell their stake.

Torrent Group, one of India's leading pharmaceutical companies, had previously expressed interest in IPL ownership when the BCCI invited bids for two new franchises in 2021. However, all ownership changes in the IPL require BCCI approval, which is expected soon.

Gujarat Titans' Performance Over the Years

The financial details of the CVC Capital stake sale remain undisclosed. However, CVC initially invested ₹5,625 crore to acquire the Gujarat Titans in 2021.

  • 2022: Under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy, Gujarat Titans won the IPL trophy in their debut season.
  • 2023: The team finished as runners-up after a strong campaign.
  • 2024: With Shubman Gill as captain, the team struggled and finished in eighth place.

Torrent Group’s Interest in IPL Expansion

Torrent Group, valued at approximately ₹41,000 crore, has been keen to enter cricket and sports investments. Through its subsidiary Torrent Sports Ventures Pvt Ltd, the group placed competitive bids for the Ahmedabad (₹4,653 crore) and Lucknow (₹4,356 crore) franchises in 2021.

In 2023, it also attempted to acquire a team in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) but was unsuccessful. Now, with this potential acquisition, Torrent Group is set to make its mark in the IPL ahead of the 2025 season.
