The Enforcement Directorate (ED) located in Chennai has attached assets valued at over 10 crores which belong to S Shankar, the eminent director of Tamil movies, on a provisional basis due to unknown reasons.

The aforementioned properties have been frozen in accordance with the provisions of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2002.

This step was taken after a Shankar was incriminated by Tamil author Aarur Tamilnadan in a complaint lodged at the 13th Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Egmore, Chennai on 19th May 2011.

By no means was the specific cases under the Copyright Act of 1957 and Indian Penal Code of 1860 where the defendant committed copy infringement of Shinaker’s Alan robot’s plot concept plot drawn from the Scooby Doo short story Jiguba.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) acted on the Complaints filed by Tamilnadan and during the investigations it came to light that S Shankar had already been awarded 11.5 crores for his part in the movie Enthiran in the form of story, screenplay, dialogue, direction, and so on.

As part of the investigation, a report from the FTII had to be conducted as well, and it discovered parallels between the two very plots of ‘Jiguba’ and the block buster ‘Enthiran’.

The ED also provided a specific disclosure on their Twitter Handle that stated, ‘Chennai ED has, on 17/02/2025, attached three properties of S. Shankar to the tune of Rs.10.11 Crore (approximately) as per the provisions of PMLA, 2002.”

Enthiran is a film that was starred by Rajnikanth and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and was released in the year of 2010. That film was a blockbuster success and it grossed a total of Rs 290 crore globally.

After investigations have been conducted, it is now understood that Shankar has indeed committed an offence under Section 63 of the Copyright Act of 1957 and is considered a scheduled offense under the PMLA 2002.

The case also had a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against shanker which The Metropolitan Magistrate Court-II of Egmore placed on director S Shankar for failing to appear in court on multiple occasions concerning the case.

What Tamilnadan Attempted to Say

Aarur Tamilnadan is known to have published a short story by the name of 'Jiguba' in a Tamil magazine Iniya Udhayam in the year 1996. It was later published as a novel under the title of Dhik Dhik Dheepika in 2007.

Tamilnadan further claimed that his short story Jiguba was turned into a movie in 2010 under the name Enthiran without any permission from him. He then proceeded to sue Shankar and the production staff for plagiarism.
