The spiritual journey to the Himalayas is all set to begin! In preparation for the Char Dham Yatra 2026, the Uttarakhand Transport Department has officially started issuing 'Green Cards' for all commercial and private vehicles starting today. This mandatory document is essential for any vehicle intending to travel on the hilly routes of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath.
Key Dates for the 2026 Pilgrimage The gates (Kapaat) of the holy shrines are scheduled to open earlier than usual this year.
April 19, 2026: The auspicious doors of Yamunotri and Gangotri will open for devotees.
Kedarnath & Badrinath: The opening dates for these shrines will be announced following the traditional rituals on Akshaya Tritiya.
What is a Vehicle Green Card? The Green Card is a fitness and safety certification for vehicles navigating the treacherous mountain terrains. The Transport Department ensures that only vehicles in top mechanical condition, with valid insurance and pollution certificates, are allowed on the yatra route.
Trip Cards: Along with the Green Card, drivers must also generate a 'Trip Card' for every specific journey, which helps the administration track the number of pilgrims on the route at any given time.
New Online Registration Process To avoid long queues at check-posts in Rishikesh and Haridwar, the government has streamlined the online registration portal.
Log in to the official Uttarakhand Transport website.
Upload vehicle documents and driver details.
Pay the nominal fee and download the digital Green Card.
Safety First: Health Advisories for Pilgrims Due to the high altitude and unpredictable weather, the state government has issued a health advisory. Pilgrims are encouraged to undergo a medical check-up before starting the trek, especially those visiting Kedarnath (situated at 11,755 ft). With over 50 lakh devotees expected this year, the administration has also increased the number of emergency medical centers along the route.
Conclusion: With the "Green Card" window now open, the countdown to one of India’s biggest spiritual gatherings has officially begun. If you are planning to drive your own vehicle or hire a cab, ensure your paperwork is in order before heading to the “Devbhoomi.”
