In January 2021, Twitter permanently banned Donald Trump's account following the attack on the U.S. Capitol by his supporters. The platform stated that Trump’s actions violated its policies and posed a risk of inciting violence. As a result, Trump filed a lawsuit against Twitter and its co-founder, Jack Dorsey. However, a judge dismissed the case in 2022. Despite this, X (formerly Twitter) has now agreed to settle the lawsuit by paying Trump $10 million.

How Did Elon Musk Reinstate Trump’s Account?

After acquiring Twitter in 2022, Elon Musk reinstated Trump’s account in 2023. Before making the decision, Musk conducted a public poll on Twitter, where 15 million users participated. The results showed that 51.8% of voters supported Trump’s return, while 48.2% opposed it.

Following the poll, Musk tweeted:
“The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated. Vox Populi, Vox Dei.”
This Latin phrase translates to "The voice of the people is the voice of God."

Trump’s Return to Twitter (X)

In August 2023, Trump made his comeback on X after two years. His first post was a mugshot taken at the time of his arrest, which quickly went viral.

Other Social Media Bans

Besides Twitter, Trump faced bans from other major platforms:

  • Facebook (Meta): Suspended Trump in 2021 but reached a $25 million settlement with him in January 2024.
  • Google (YouTube): Also banned Trump in 2021. His lawsuit against Google remains unresolved.
