The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday accused Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Colburn, of having connections with Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI and an advisor to Pakistan’s Planning Commission, Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. The accusations, made by BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia, were swiftly dismissed by Gogoi as “ridiculous and amusing.” He countered that the BJP was making baseless allegations because it had no real issues to address.
Gogoi also pointed out that similar defamatory campaigns were launched against him and his family before the last Lok Sabha elections, yet he was elected from the Jorhat parliamentary constituency in Assam.
BJP’s Allegations Against Gogoi’s Wife
BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia claimed that Gogoi’s wife has ties to Pakistani officials and that her organization receives funding from billionaire investor George Soros, whom BJP has accused of trying to destabilize India’s national security.
"This is an extremely serious matter as it concerns national security," Bhatia said, demanding clarifications from Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Gaurav Gogoi.
Bhatia further asked, “Is Gaurav Gogoi and his wife following Rahul Gandhi’s agenda to weaken India?”
Himanta Biswa Sarma Joins Attack on Gogoi
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also weighed in on the controversy, making sharp allegations against Gogoi in a post on Twitter (X).
"Serious questions need to be answered about the allegations of links with ISI, taking youths to the Pakistan Embassy to lure and radicalize them, and refusing to accept Indian citizenship for the last 12 years."
Sarma also accused Gogoi’s circle of being involved in:
- Conversion gangs
- Receiving funds from external sources, including George Soros
- Destabilizing national security
Gaurav Gogoi Hits Back at BJP and Himanta Biswa Sarma
Gogoi retaliated by accusing Himanta Biswa Sarma’s family of being involved in multiple land scams, claiming that BJP leaders in Delhi have been briefed about the alleged wrongdoing.
"Fearing that he may lose his chair, Himanta Biswa Sarma is trying to divert attention by launching a campaign to defame me and my family," Gogoi said.
He further added that with a year still left before the Assam Assembly elections, BJP is already feeling the pressure because people are losing faith in the party, leading them to attack him with fabricated claims.
This fresh political controversy has intensified tensions between BJP and Congress, highlighting the escalating war of words between the ruling party and the opposition as the 2026 Assam Assembly elections approach.
