Apple has been issued a lot of criticism for sidelining their DEI policies, but with fervor, they refuse to back down, regardless of the assumptions that do stem from lack of diversity. A compelling narrative that does surround Apple's actions is the center focal point for this text. On the 25th of February, investors made a bold move by refusing the disbanding of focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives from the Apple sphere during the annual shareholder meeting. While most companies are in turmoil trying to get balance the scales after the decision made by Trump concerning the DEI plans, Apple rests easy knowing they are mostly untouched.
The Dungeon center granted decision in favor of Apple’s larger objectives on account of some unscrupulous allegations made against the company. The National Center for Public policy framed the accusation with the assumption that Apple’s focus on DEI stems from bias. Their approach was intended to undermine the Apple brand that they believe possesses high potential for litigation. What makes the entire situation child's play is the fact that there was a trail of injuries to reputation and monetary losses too. The reveal was over the top, to say the least. Simultaneous to the voting on the proposal, Apple’s top management fought back highlighting that the nurture of innovation is integrated with DEI which leads to the enabling of the company culture that is critical for success thus rendering the proposal void. What truly makes this situation absurd is the C level decision makers at Apple.
They believe that having strict policies aids in driving unwanted behavior from employees rather than motivation. The enormous disparity highlights how difference of approach fundamentally alters the outcome. Deceitful behavior is illegal, so their hope is that business loopholes should be granted for escaping jurisdictions. In the end, it is for the greater good, Apple has to be given credit for attracting the required attention to do with policy enforcement. While doing so, they ensure integrity and empowerment through a strategy of removing silos of predefined world where every worker is permitted to achieve more and foster a better culture, leading to feeling like they belong. It may have been issued way before, but Apple truly envisions and strives to make every citizen’s tech within reach. Thus it can be said that Apple is at the helm on the charge while rest of the corporate sphere chasing after them.
As per Bloomberg, the Apple CEO appears to state that “We cannot afford to lose our values, but we may need to make some shifts as other regulations come into place.” Tim Cook appears to be very hopeful that Apple would still be able to create a “global company where everyone can do their best work.”
Apple has, however, maintained that it will not implement ANY diversity DEI-related hiring quotas. Rather, Cook pointed out, “The strength of Apple is the absence of a culture, just a culture where people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives come together.”
