Abdullah Azam Khan, former MLA and son of senior Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Azam Khan, has finally walked free from Hardoi district jail today. He had been behind bars for over 16 months in connection with the fake birth certificate case. Initially lodged in Rampur jail, Abdullah was transferred to Hardoi jail on October 22, 2023. With bail granted in all the cases against him, his release order was received by the jail authorities, leading to his much-anticipated freedom.
Supporters Gather Outside Jail to Celebrate
As soon as news of Abdullah's release broke, a large number of supporters gathered outside Hardoi district jail, eagerly waiting to welcome him. Among them were several Samajwadi Party leaders, including Moradabad's SP MP Ruchi Veera, who expressed faith in the judiciary. "We believed in the justice system before, and we continue to do so. We have received justice, and we trust we will in the future too," she stated.
Supporters traveled from Rampur and various other districts to witness his release. However, with Section 144 imposed in the district, the police warned people against gathering in large numbers. To avoid any legal trouble, Abdullah’s supporters positioned themselves in smaller groups at different locations.
Supreme Court Grants Bail
A few days ago, the Supreme Court granted bail to Abdullah Azam Khan. Later, the MP-MLA Magistrate Trial Court of Rampur also approved bail in the remaining case. Despite securing bail in all 45 cases registered against him, delays in legal proceedings and his continued imprisonment led to complications in his release. However, once his bail verification report was cleared, his release warrant was issued by the MP-MLA Magistrate Trial Court and sent to Hardoi Jail on Monday. The process was completed, and Abdullah was finally released on Tuesday.
Azam Khan Remains Behind Bars
The case that landed Abdullah in jail also saw his father, senior SP leader Azam Khan, and mother, former MP Dr. Tazeen Fatima, sentenced to seven years of imprisonment. While Abdullah was serving his sentence in Hardoi jail, Azam Khan was lodged in Sitapur jail. Dr. Tazeen Fatima, who was also imprisoned in Rampur jail, was released on bail after spending seven months and 11 days behind bars. However, Azam Khan remains incarcerated.
With Abdullah’s release, political discussions around the Samajwadi Party leadership have gained momentum. His supporters are hopeful for his political comeback, but for now, all eyes are on what’s next for the Khan family.
