With the arrival of Makar Sankranti, the season of weddings has begun. February and March bring numerous auspicious dates for marriages, and wedding celebrations will soon fill the streets with joy. Brides will leave their parents' homes, stepping into a new chapter of life.

In Hindu tradition, a father sends his daughter off with gifts, offering what he can as a token of love and blessings. However, certain items are considered inauspicious and should never be given to a bride at the time of her farewell. Here are four things that should be avoided during the send-off.

1. Broom

According to religious beliefs, Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, resides in a broom. However, gifting a broom to a daughter during her farewell is considered highly inauspicious. It is believed that doing so can bring misfortune to her married life, filling it with struggles and sorrow.

2. Strainer (Sieve)

A flour sieve is another item that should not be given to a bride during her departure. It is thought to symbolize instability and discord. Tradition suggests that giving a sieve may lead to frequent arguments between the couple, causing unnecessary tension in their marriage.

3. Pickles

Pickles, with their tangy and sour taste, are also considered an unlucky gift for a bride. According to scriptures, offering pickles at the time of farewell can symbolize bitterness in relationships. It is believed that this may lead to misunderstandings and strained ties in her new home.

4. Sharp Objects (Needles, Knives, Scissors)

Sharp objects like needles and knives are also considered unlucky gifts for a daughter leaving for her husband's home. These items are believed to bring negativity and bitterness instead of harmony in relationships. Gifting them is thought to create obstacles in her married life.
