Kidney stones are on the rise in India, affecting many people across the country. The kidneys play a crucial role in filtering our blood, and during this process, minerals like calcium and sodium travel to the bladder. When these minerals build up and harden, they form what we know as kidney stones. Renowned dietician Ayushi Yadav warns that those prone to kidney stones should be very mindful of their diet to reduce further risks.
Foods to Avoid if You’re Prone to Kidney Stones
High Vitamin C Foods
Consuming too many vitamin C–rich foods can lead to increased stone formation. It’s advisable to limit fruits and vegetables such as lemons, spinach, oranges, mustard greens, kiwi, and guava.
Caffeinated Beverages
Kidney stone sufferers often struggle with dehydration, and caffeine can worsen this issue. Avoid cold drinks, tea, and coffee, as these beverages contain high amounts of caffeine that could potentially harm your kidneys.
High-Salt Foods
Salt can be particularly damaging because it’s high in sodium, which puts extra strain on the kidneys. Reducing your salt intake and avoiding salty foods can help manage kidney stone risks.
Non-Vegetarian Foods
While protein is essential, excessive amounts from meat, fish, and eggs can adversely affect kidney function. For those with kidney stone issues, it might be best to limit these protein-rich foods.
By being cautious with these foods, you can help reduce the risk of developing more kidney stones and maintain better kidney health.
