On Friday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested one of the principal suspects in the Mumbai attacks, Tahawwur Hussain Rana, for 18 days. He will be interrogated to expose the entire conspiracy of the 2008 terror attack.
Rana was brought to a specialized NIA court located at the Patiala House, fresh off the plane from his US extradition, and his belongings were confiscated.
Post court proceedings he was put under NIA custody and transported under strict security protocols that involved a separate convoy constituting parts of the Delhi SWAT team.
As per officials’ statements, Rana would be placed in a maximum security detention cell within the anti-terror headquarters located on CGO complex here.
“Succeeding the order from the court, the NIA provided a statement that, “Rana will remain in NIA custody for 18 days during which time the agency will question him in detail in order to unravel the complete conspiracy behind the deadly 2008 attacks, in which a total of 166 persons were killed and over 238 were injured,”
The NIA took full custodial control of Rana post his court extradition without delays from his New Delhi court, it noted.
The NIA had been working for years to secure Rana’s extradiction from the US, which came through after all his litigation attempts, including with the Supreme Court, failed. Ultimately, all efforts by the terrorist mastermind to halt his extradition from the US were futile.
On a private jet, NIA and NSG officials received him at LAX, and transported him to New Delhi under heavy escort.
As per the statement, the Extradition came through after intensive joint efforts by the Indian Ministries of Home Affairs and External Affairs with US counterparts finally acquired the relevant documents.
The surrender warrant for the terrorist had to be issued first, which is what finally led to the extradition.
