Chronic diseases in American youth: America is considered a superpower, but it has its share of problems with multi-diseased youth. One study claimed that over the past two decades, ADHD, autism, asthma, pre-diabetes, and anxiety disorders have cumulatively affected up to 30 percent of the American population.

25 million sufferers

Now, within the ages of five to twenty-five, an estimated 25 million people live with these chronic conditions from childhood. They are debilitating to a significant degree, interfering with daily life activities.

What did the researchers say?

“The prevalence of the childhood condition is currently higher than previous estimates,” said Lauren Wisk, MD, the lead author and a UCLA’s Assistant Professor of Medicine.

“Socioeconomically disadvantaged young adults, perhaps due to low education, low income, those on public insurance, or even unemployed, are more likely to have a chronic condition compared to their more privileged peers,” Wisk noted.

How many people were studied during the research?

TheResearch conducted for the report published in the Academic Pediatrics journal analyzed data from 236,500 participants aged between 5 to 25 years residing in the US.

Children at Risk in This Age Range

In the period between 1999 and 2018, children aged between 5 to 17 years were diagnosed with several issues that cumulatively gave rise to an estimated 130,000 children every year. In the next lag of time, 18 to 25 year old young adults started displaying a similar growing trend, shifting from an 18% acceptance to 29% acceptance during the specified period, thus leading the young adults to approximately 80,000 each year.

Wisk claimed that almost every condition could be treated with good health care facilities. To help preserve the health and wellbeing of these young individuals, the researchers called for further spending to ensure that these young people were adequately able to connect with healthcare professionals throughout their lives.
