In a later addressed, he conducted a meeting with concerned officials to review the progress made in the cleanup effort. He said, “The entire drainage system of Delhi will be integrated with sewage treatment plants (STPs). Their capacity will also be increased so that untreated effluents would not be released into the river.” To clean the Yamuna was one of the main promises given by the BJP in the recently held Delhi Assembly elections.

He assured the public that the complaints regarding the sewage treatment would also be solved and all STPs are projected to be put up within two years. “In 2023, the city of Delhi was flooded, and all floodgates were closed. Now its floodgates have been modified to be lifted to stop the city from flooding,” the minister explained.

He said, “Our Words plans plan is to unfailingly clean and restore the Yamuna one hundred percent.” Till now, he said, “To this day, 1300 metric tonnes of garbage has been cleaned within ten days.” Verma made known, speaking about plans, that there would be a collective STP set up in the industrial regions for the treatment of industrial effluent for the proper disposal of chemicals.

In addition, repair work is being done to the security walls at the ITO Barrage gates to make them higher and reduce the chance of flooding. The minister further added that special drives are being carried out to clean the banks of the rivers and establish more green areas. Verma said, “We have directed the Delhi Development Authority to undertake work on the Yamuna Riverfront to convert its banks into a center to promote tourism and culture.”

“On paper, there hasn’t been a clean up of the river in the last 10 years,” he claimed. It never occurred to the last government to make an effort for the Yamuna. But now, it is not just the Delhi government, but the PMO also that is involved,” Verma said.
