If you are currently in Dehradun or Rishikesh and feeling the unseasonal March heat, look toward the peaks relief is on the way. The Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several parts of Uttarakhand as a new Western Disturbance begins to impact the Himalayan region.
Snow in the High Peaks The higher reaches of the state, particularly areas above 3,500 meters, are expected to see significant snowfall. This includes the shrines of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. For those planning early treks or visits to these regions, the sudden drop in temperature will be a sharp reminder that winter isn't quite finished with the mountains yet.
Rain for the Valley and Foothills It’s not just the high altitudes getting the action. Lower districts including Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, and Nainital are likely to witness light to moderate rainfall. The IMD has also warned of potential hailstorms and lightning in isolated pockets. This rain is being welcomed by locals as it will help settle the dust and slightly lower the soaring temperatures seen over the last few days.
Impact on Travel and Safety While the rain is a welcome relief, it brings its own set of challenges. Authorities have advised travelers heading toward Chamoli and Uttarkashi to be cautious of slippery roads and possible minor landslides in sensitive zones. If you are planning a weekend trip to Mussoorie or Dhanaulti, expect cloudy skies and a misty, chilly atmosphere—perfect for a getaway, but don't forget your woolens!
The cooling effect of this disturbance is expected to last for the next 48 to 72 hours, providing a temporary shield against the heatwave sweeping through the rest of the country.
