Utpanna Ekadashi holds a unique and revered place in the Hindu calendar as it marks the origin of the Ekadashi fast. Observed on the eleventh day of the Krishna Paksha (the waning phase of the moon) in the month of Margashirsha, this day celebrates the divine emergence of Goddess Ekadashi from Lord Vishnu. For devotees wishing to begin the practice of observing Ekadashi fasts throughout the year, Utpanna Ekadashi is considered the ideal and most auspicious day to start.
In 2025, the Utpanna Ekadashi fast will be observed on Saturday, November 15th.

The Legend of Goddess Ekadashi's Emergence
The story of Utpanna Ekadashi dates back to the Satya Yuga and is associated with the powerful demon Mura. Having defeated the gods, Mura's reign of terror led the deities to seek help from Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu engaged the demon in a battle that spanned a thousand celestial years.
Feeling weary, Lord Vishnu retired to rest in a cave named Himavati at Badarikashrama. The demon Mura followed, intending to slay the Lord in his sleep. At that moment, a divine female energy manifested from Lord Vishnu's body. This radiant goddess, armed and powerful, challenged Mura, fought valiantly, and ultimately vanquished the demon.
Upon awakening, Lord Vishnu was pleased with this divine form. Since she had emerged on the eleventh day of the lunar fortnight, he named her Ekadashi. He granted her a boon, proclaiming that anyone who fasts on her day would be absolved of their sins and attain salvation (moksha).
Significance and Vrat Rituals
Observing the Utpanna Ekadashi vrat is believed to wash away past and present sins, bestow peace of mind, and ultimately lead the devotee to Vaikuntha Dham, the abode of Lord Vishnu. Key rituals include:
The Highly Auspicious Trisparsha Ekadashi
A rare and exceptionally sacred occurrence is the Trisparsha Ekadashi. This happens when the Ekadashi, Dwadashi, and Trayodashi tithis fall within the same day (from one sunrise to the next). It is believed to be very dear to Lord Vishnu. The spiritual merit gained from observing a single Trisparsha Ekadashi fast is said to be equivalent to the fruit of a thousand regular Ekadashi fasts, granting righteousness, wealth, fulfillment of desires, and salvation.
