The month of Paush holds a special significance in the Sanatan Dharma and is dedicated to the worship of Lord Sun who is revered as a visible deity. According to the Hindu calendar the month of Paush in the year 2025 commences after the full moon of the Margashirsha month. Religious scholars suggest that this month is ideal for spiritual growth and attaining salvation through devotion even though it often coincides with the inauspicious period known as Kharmas. During this month the Sun God is worshipped in his Bhaga form and offering Arghya or water to the rising sun daily brings health and prosperity to the devotees.

This period is marked by the transition of the Sun into the Sagittarius zodiac sign which signals the beginning of Kharmas or Malmaas. Due to this planetary shift carrying out auspicious activities such as marriages engagement ceremonies housewarming rituals and head shaving ceremonies is strictly prohibited in the scriptures. The period of Kharmas continues until the Sun enters Capricorn which marks the festival of Makar Sankranti. While material celebrations are put on hold the time is considered extremely fruitful for charity chanting mantras and performing penance.

Astrologers advise specific practices to maximize the benefits of this holy month. Taking a holy dip in sacred rivers like the Ganga is considered highly virtuous but if that is not possible bathing with water mixed with a little Ganga water at home is a recommended alternative. Donating warm clothes jaggery sesame seeds and blankets to the needy is believed to remove planetary defects and bring good fortune. Consuming plain food and avoiding tamasic items like meat and alcohol is mandatory for those observing the rituals. The month concludes with Paush Purnima which is a significant day for performing religious rites and large scale donations.
