Former Indian opener Abhinav Mukund has offered some surprising advice to the BCCI, suggesting that a split captaincy model could be a "smart move" to alleviate the pressure on Shubman Gill. Mukund believes that by appointing another player as captain in one of the formats, the burden on the young skipper would be significantly reduced.
Mukund pointed out that while Gill has led the team well, the pressures of captaining across all three formats, combined with the expectation to perform with the bat, can be overwhelming. He argued that the current vice-captain, Rishabh Pant, could be an excellent candidate to take over the captaincy in one of the formats, which would allow Gill to concentrate more on his batting.
This suggestion comes as Shubman Gill is poised to become the youngest Indian captain to lead the team in Australia, a milestone that will surpass the record held by the legendary Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Mukund’s advice stems from a desire to see Gill flourish as a batsman without being weighed down by the immense responsibilities of leadership across all formats. The former cricketer emphasized that such a strategic division of leadership could ultimately benefit both Gill and the Indian team in the long run.
