Two prominent advisors have officially resigned from the cabinet of the interim government of Bangladesh in a significant political development aimed at preserving administrative neutrality ahead of the upcoming national elections the key student leaders Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan and Mahfuz Alam submitted their resignation letters to Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday evening this decision comes just a day before the Chief Election Commissioner is expected to formally announce the schedule for the next parliamentary polls which are likely to take place soon the primary motivation behind their departure is to adhere to ethical standards that discourage interim government officials from holding office while contesting elections as both leaders intend to run for parliament
Asif Mahmud had been serving as the Advisor for the Ministry of Local Government Rural Development and Cooperatives as well as the Ministry of Youth and Sports while Mahfuz Alam held the portfolio for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting both young leaders rose to prominence as key coordinators of the Anti Discrimination Student Movement that led the mass uprising in July resulting in the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following the fall of the previous government they were inducted into the interim cabinet formed under the leadership of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus to help stabilize the nation their resignation marks the exit of the student representatives who played a crucial role in the transitional administration
The Chief Advisors press wing confirmed that the resignations were voluntary and intended to ensure a transparent and impartial election environment in his resignation letter Asif Mahmud expressed that it was a proud experience to serve the nation during such a critical transition but emphasized that stepping down was the proper course of action for a candidate participating in the polls this move follows a similar earlier decision by another student leader Nahid Islam who had left the cabinet to pursue active politics with these departures the political landscape of Bangladesh shifts focus entirely toward the highly anticipated general election as new political forces formed by the youth leaders prepare to contest for power through the democratic process
