Yakub Patel of Bharuch becomes first Gujarati Mayor of Preston, England

Gujarat-born Yakub Patel has been elected as the new mayor of Preston in the county of Lancashire, UK. Jacobs was previously a councilor and an active member of the local community. Born in Bharuch district of Gujarat, he moved to UK in 1976 after graduating from MS University, Baroda.

British media reported that Yakub Patel has taken over as the new mayor of Preston, a city in the county of Lancashire in northern England whose mayoral tradition dates back to the 14th century. “I have strong ties to the city where I began my career with Preston Corporation in 1979,” Yacoub said after taking over as mayor. He was then elected as a Labor Party councilor for the city’s Avenham ward for the first time in 1995, becoming the first Muslim councilor in the history of Preston City Council. Involved in politics since the age of 10, father was a member of the Indira Gandhi government.
