US Sanctions Indian Couple & 9 Firms in Massive Crackdown on Iran's Oil Fleet

Post

In a major expansion of its economic pressure campaign against Tehran, the United States has imposed strict new sanctions on individuals and corporate entities across India and Turkey, accusing them of orchestrating an elaborate maritime fraud network designed to help Iran evade international oil embargoes. The aggressive enforcement action was announced by the US Department of the Treasury in the wake of the Democratic Party's sweeping victory in the US midterm elections, where voter backlash had centered heavily on inflation and the escalating Iran conflict. Executed under the Trump administration's "Operation Economic Outcast," the sanctions are aimed at dismantling Tehran's petroleum revenue streams to prevent the financing of military activities and regional proxies targeting the United States and Israel.

The Chandigarh Connection: Fake Flag Registries for Guyana, Eswatini, and Laos

At the epicenter of the international maritime crackdown is an Indian couple residing in Chandigarh—Sunil Kumar Sharma and his wife Jaspreet Preeti Shahid—along with two other Indian nationals who managed their commercial operations. According to official findings released by the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), Sharma and Shahid established a deceptive operational apparatus, falsely claiming to represent sovereign maritime registries for countries such as Guyana, Eswatini, and Laos. The couple registered deceptive web domains and published websites that offered counterfeit vessel classifications, seafarer training certifications, and fraudulent sovereign flag assignments, allowing sanctioned crude tankers operating on behalf of the Iranian military and its regional proxies to mask their origin, bypass global maritime checkpoints, and continue moving illicit oil shipments worldwide.

Environmental Hazards and Sanctions on Turkish Aviation Firm Fuego Ground Services

US maritime regulators emphasized that by flying fraudulent flags and utilizing illegitimate safety documentation, tankers in Iran's shadow fleet circumvent essential international maritime safety, navigational, and environmental regulations. Lacking valid protection and indemnity (P&I) insurance, these covert vessels pose catastrophic ecological and financial risks running into billions of dollars for coastal nations whose territorial waters they transit. Alongside the nine India-based corporate entities linked to Sharma, the US Treasury designated Turkey-based Fuego Ground Services Inc. for providing vital ground handling and logistical operations to US-blacklisted Iranian carriers operating flights into Turkey, including Iran Air Tour, Saha Airlines, Taban Airlines, and Ata Airlines.

"We Know Where You Are": Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Issues Global Ultimatum

Underlining the administration's uncompromising stance, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that Washington will aggressively target any intermediary facilitating Tehran’s strategic trade, irrespective of geographical borders. Issuing an explicit warning on social media platform X, Bessent reiterated, "As we've said many times, under Operation Economic Outcast, you are either with us or against us. We know where you are, and we will sanction those who continue to support the Iranian regime, whether they do so by land, sea, or air." Geopolitical analysts noted that the move demonstrates Washington's resolve to intensify economic warfare against Iran regardless of domestic political shifts, signaling to international risk assessors that the White House remains unwilling to de-escalate financial measures against networks facilitating Iranian oil commerce.
