Pakistan Imposes Lockdown on Islamabad with 1,000 Spiked Containers to Foil PTI Protest March

Pakistani authorities have turned the federal capital of Islamabad into a virtual fortress, enforcing sweeping lockdown measures to preempt a major protest march organized by incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). In a bid to halt tens of thousands of opposition supporters demanding Khan’s immediate release from prison, law enforcement agencies have barricaded all key arterial roads entering Islamabad using more than 1,000 heavy shipping containers, many reinforced with metal spikes. With transit bridges reinforced by sandbags, major national highways blocked, public gatherings outlawed, and 22,000 heavily armed police and paramilitary personnel deployed across the capital, civic life has ground to a complete standstill.

The security lockdown has rippled beyond federal territory into the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa:

Inter-Provincial Transport Severed: Authorities shut down the vital motorway and primary trunk highways linking the provincial capital Peshawar to Islamabad, isolating the capital from surrounding regions.

Economic Paralysis and Supply Snarls: The extensive container blockades and strict movement restrictions have triggered severe shortages of daily essential goods, leaving traders, local shopkeepers, and everyday commuters struggling amid paralyzed urban transport.

Tactical Rescheduling: While the high-stakes march was originally slated to kick off on September 27, PTI leadership announced on Friday that the mobilization would officially commence on October 4, aiming to maximize organizational reach and build political momentum against the government.

Demand for Imran Khan's Release and the Preventive Custody of His Three Sisters

The planned demonstrations center on demands for the unconditional release of Imran Khan, who has remained behind bars since August 2023 following convictions across several state cases that his party contends are politically motivated:

Allegations of Custodial Mistreatment: PTI leaders and loyalists continue to raise urgent alarms regarding Khan’s safety in detention, alleging deliberate isolation and unfair conditions inside his cell.

Sweeping Detention of Family Members: Raising political temperatures ahead of the protest, law enforcement officials placed Khan's family under intense scrutiny, detaining his sister Aleema Khan first, followed closely by Uzma Khan and Noorin Niazi.

30-Day Preventive Custody Orders: Under the provisions of the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance, authorities ordered all three sisters held in custody for 30 days to preempt logistical organizing and prevent them from spearheading street crowds.
