International Women's Day 2025: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and Polycystic Ovary Disorder (PCOD) are a set of hormonal dysregulations. There are almost millions of women all over the world suffering from PCOS. What comes as a surprise is that most women think that many foods including sugar should not be consumed in PCOS. Lets understand with Dr. Riddhima Khamsera what women are supposed to eat and avoid during PCOS.

Inositol

Inositol is very helpful for patients affected with PCOS. It is also known as vitamin B8. Inositol helps control the insulin and lower the body's testosterone levels. It has the additional advantage of improving the mood. One's diet for inositol should include citrus fruits, beans and nuts.

Including Seeds

Seeds need to be included in the diet during PCOD and PCOS for the control of estrogen and progesterone. But these seeds should be consumed according to the different phases of the menstrual cycle. There are 4 cycles of menstrual cycle. Menstruation, follicular phase, ovulation, luteal phase. During the follicular phase flaxseed and pumpkin seeds should be consumed. In the luteal phase, sesame and sunflower seeds should be consumed. This helps in maintaining proper functioning of the hormones.

Turmeric

Among PCOD and PCOS patients, turmeric intake has received deep praise. Turmeric boasts a number of nutrients such as the androgen lowering compounds.

Magnesium

For the hormonal imbalance, magnesium is one of the staples that should be the norm in the diet.

Magnesium helps a lot in maintaining good health. Magnesium minimises stress and also helps in lowering sugar levels. It can be found in dark chocolates, almonds, and green leafy vegetables.

The digestive system

Maintaining and exercising good hygiene on the digestive system is crucial. Digestion directly impacts hormones too. To maintain a good digestive system, one should eat probiotics like kimchi, kefir, and sauerkaut.
