The former IPL commissioner is now facing yet another obstacle. Lalit Modi’s passport has been cancelled by the Vanuatu Prime Minister amid rumors of extradition. This news comes shortly after Modi’s application to surrender his Indian passport in the Indian High Commission in London. News18 states Vanuatu Prime Minister Jotham Napat canceled Modi’s passport under the claim that the former IPL commissioner is trying to escape extradition to India.
After allegations of embezzlement, Modi fled India in 2010. During his time as IPL commissioner, he was accused of embezzling crores of rupees. According to the officials of Vanuatu PM, this order he set in place stemmed from “recent revelations in the international media.”
The Vanuatu PM commented on India’s two requests to Interpol placing an order against Lal Modi. Both orders were cancelled. Without an alert from Interpol, Modi’s citizenship application would, Napat claims, have been denied “automatically.” Napat further commented that “holding a Vanuatu passport is a privilege, not a right.”
In a terse response to the IPL czar, PM Napat stated that the claimant (Lalit Modi) was attempting to evade extradition. Following his departure from India, Modi has been quite cozy in London. He regularly shares on social media the places he vacations at, and recently, he shared photos from Monaco. On the 7th of March, Modi submitted a request to India’s MEA for the cancellation of his Indian passport.
