Winter Fog Disrupts Rail Travel: Northern Railway Cancels 10 Delhi-Lucknow Trains

Post

Anticipating reduced track visibility and operational safety challenges caused by incoming dense winter fog, Northern Railway has announced an extensive three-month alteration to its passenger train network across north India. In an official administrative notification issued by the Moradabad railway division on Thursday, October 22, 2026, railway authorities confirmed that a total of 26 prominent long-distance express trains will face direct operational disruptions between December 2026 and February 2027. Under the preemptive winter safety blueprint, 10 high-density express trains connecting major transit hubs—including Delhi, Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Chandigarh, and Kamakhya—will remain completely cancelled, while the running frequency of 16 other key intercity routes will be systematically curtailed, heavily impacting daily and seasonal commuters traveling via Bareilly Junction.

Complete Cancellations: 10 Major Express Trains Suspended Across December to February

Outlining the comprehensive list of fully grounded services, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (Senior DCM) of the Moradabad Division, Mahesh Yadav, confirmed that the cancellation schedule targets high-speed corridors traversing dense fog belts:

Dibrugarh–Chandigarh Route: Train number 15903 Dibrugarh–Chandigarh Express will remain completely suspended from December 4, 2026, to February 26, 2027, while the return rake, 15904 Chandigarh–Dibrugarh Express, will stand cancelled from December 6, 2026, to February 28, 2027.

Kamakhya–Anand Vihar Line: Train number 15621 Kamakhya–Anand Vihar Terminal Express is cancelled between December 3, 2026, and February 25, 2027, with corresponding return train 15622 Anand Vihar Terminal–Kamakhya Express grounded from December 4, 2026, to February 26, 2027.

Lucknow–Anand Vihar Double Decker/Express: High-demand intercity services 12583 Lucknow Junction–Anand Vihar Terminal and 12584 Anand Vihar Terminal–Lucknow Junction will remain fully non-operational from December 15, 2026, through February 14, 2027.

Gorakhpur & Lalkuan Connectors to Anand Vihar: Train number 15057 Gorakhpur–Anand Vihar Terminal stands cancelled from December 17, 2026, to February 11, 2027, along with its pair 15058 Anand Vihar Terminal–Gorakhpur from December 16, 2026, to February 10, 2027. Additionally, train numbers 15059 Lalkuan–Anand Vihar Terminal and 15060 Anand Vihar Terminal–Lalkuan will remain suspended from December 15, 2026, through February 14, 2027.

Frequency Reductions: 16 Express Trains to Run on Truncated Weekly Schedules

To optimize railway line capacity and prevent cascading operational delays, Northern Railway has also curtailed running frequencies for 16 major express trains operating from December through February:

Inter-State Long Hauls: Train numbers 15725/15726 New Jalpaiguri–Anand Vihar–New Jalpaiguri Express and 15909/15910 Dibrugarh–Lalgarh Avadh Assam Express will operate on reduced weekly frequencies to avoid prolonged en-route fog stalling.

Regional & Hill Connectors: Commuter favorite 15035/15036 Delhi–Kathgodam–Delhi Express alongside 25035/25036 Moradabad–Ramnagar–Moradabad will see multiple weekly trip cancellations throughout the peak winter period.

Pilgrimage and Industrial Links: Frequencies have been trimmed for 15119/15120 Banaras–Dehradun–Banaras Express, 15127/15128 Banaras–New Delhi–Banaras Express, 15074/15073 Tanakpur–Singrauli–Tanakpur Express, and 15076/15075 Tanakpur–Shaktinagar–Tanakpur Express.

Commuter Advisory: Route via Bareilly Junction to Experience Heavy Booking Backlogs

With the vast majority of these 26 impacted services cutting right through Bareilly, Moradabad, and Lucknow rail divisions, passenger transit across Uttar Pradesh, Delhi NCR, and Uttarakhand faces major bottlenecks:

Surge in Alternate Bookings: Passengers planning winter holiday journeys, family weddings, or business trips between national capital terminals and eastern Uttar Pradesh are urged to check running statuses well in advance, as remaining operational trains will face intense waitlists.

Proactive Refund Processing: Indian Railways will initiate standard automated ticket cancellations and full fare refunds for travelers whose bookings fall directly under the designated winter fog cancellation dates through the IRCTC web platform and physical passenger reservation system (PRS) counters.
