UP's Healthcare Transformation Drives 115% Rise in District Hospitals and Massive CHC-PHC Expansion
Marking nine and a half years of administrative governance under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh has witnessed an unprecedented overhaul of its public healthcare infrastructure, transforming grassroots medical access from major district headquarters to remote village settlements. According to official performance metrics released by the state government, sustained budget outlays and systematic capacity building have led to a massive 115% surge in district-level government and specialized medical facilities, jumping from 109 hospitals in 2017 to 234 active centers in 2026. The widespread modernization drive has expanded primary care availability, advanced diagnostic equipment, institutional nursing education, and critical life-support systems, creating a robust, equitable medical safety net for rural and urban populations alike.
Grassroots Network Expansion: PHCs, CHCs, and 29,896 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs
The decentralized healthcare footprint has grown substantially at the community and block levels, ensuring tertiary relief reaches the last mile. The tally of Community Health Centers (CHCs) expanded by nearly 19 percent, rising from 821 to 977 units across the state. Similarly, rural Primary Health Centers (PHCs) grew by 8 percent from 2,811 to 3,035 facilities, while Urban Primary Health Centers (UPHCs) jumped by 33 percent from 542 to 721 clinics, driving the aggregate PHC network from 3,353 to 3,756 centers across Uttar Pradesh. Peripheral health sub-centers witnessed a staggering 40 percent rise, increasing from 20,573 in 2017 to 28,845 in 2026. Complementing this network, an impressive 29,896 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs are operational across the state, including 14,872 hubs running under the National Health Mission (NHM), multiple agency-partnered centers, and 1,425 newly commissioned urban wellness centers delivering continuous preventive and diagnostic care.
Hi-Tech Critical Care, Anesthesia Clinics, and Medical College Growth
Beyond brick-and-mortar additions, the state's intervention emphasizes emergency life-saving preparedness, technological modernization, and human resource development. Overcoming a complete absence of government nursing colleges at the CHC level in 2017, the state has established 73 fully equipped nursing colleges to ensure a steady pipeline of trained medical staff. Specialized anesthesia clinics and dedicated medical officers have been deployed across 543 CHCs statewide, decentralizing surgical care to local blocks. Under the emergency COVID-19 response package (ECRP-2), high-resolution digital X-ray machines have been operationalized in 370 CHCs, alongside widespread ultrasound diagnostic suites. To handle acute medical emergencies, the state has commissioned 189 dedicated pressure swing adsorption (PSA) oxygen generation plants and 161 operational blood storage units, supported by Integrated Public Health Labs and advanced Critical Care Blocks that cement Uttar Pradesh's transition toward a world-class public health ecosystem.
