In a targeted move to revitalize the rural economy and empower agrarian youth with sustainable self-employment avenues, the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has rolled out a comprehensive beekeeping promotion drive across the state. Spearheaded by the Department of Horticulture and Food Processing, the initiative is designed to transform traditional farming households into commercial honey-producing enterprises, giving rural youth an independent source of supplementary income without requiring large landholdings. By combining modern apiculture techniques with institutional financial backing, the state administration aims to position apiculture as a premier agro-business model across northern and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
90-Day Specialized Scientific Training Underway Across Prayagraj, Saharanpur, and Basti Hubs
To ensure that beneficiaries operate with technical proficiency, the state is conducting an extensive 90-day hands-on residential training program across three premier regional facilities, continuing through December 15. A total of 76 shortlisted candidates are currently mastering scientific apiary management, colony multiplication, disease management, and modern honey extraction techniques. The cohort includes 32 trainees at the State Beekeeping Training Center in Prayagraj, 29 participants at the Saharanpur Center, and 15 candidates at the Basti Horticultural Experiment and Training Center, equipping rural entrepreneurs to independently handle commercial-scale bee yards.
Beneficiaries to Receive 50 Bee Boxes and Modern Apiary Kits
Detailing the financial architecture of the program, Director of Parks Bhanu Prakash Ram confirmed that the Uttar Pradesh government is delivering a 40 percent subsidy on total unit costs to ease capital hurdles for new entrants. Each sanctioned unit provides beneficiaries with 50 live bee colonies housed in standardized bee boxes alongside essential extraction machinery, protective gear, comb foundation sheets, and maintenance equipment. Beyond lucrative returns from pure honey, beeswax, and royal jelly sales, horticulture officials noted that maintaining bee colonies adjacent to agricultural fields substantially enhances cross-pollination rates, significantly boosting yields and overall quality for mustard, pulses, and regional fruit orchards.
