Industrial pollution along the banks of the Kali River in Bhagosa village, located within the Akrabad block of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, has sparked widespread outrage among local farming communities. On Wednesday, the Bharatiya Mazdoor Kisan Union staged a protest at the District Collectorate, raising alarms over illegal factories discharging untreated chemical effluents into water streams and venting hazardous fumes that are laying waste to standing crops and imperiling rural health.

Severe Crop Damage and Rising Public Health Concerns

The uncontrolled discharge from industrial units lining the riverbank has triggered multi-dimensional challenges for the agricultural belt in Akrabad:

Agricultural Devastation: Contaminated wastewater regularly seeps into adjoining farmland, rendering fertile soils barren and destroying seasonal harvests, which has plunged local cultivators into mounting financial distress.

Respiratory Illnesses: Toxic gases emitted by these units have triggered severe breathing difficulties among residents, with vulnerable groups including infants, children, and women bearing the brunt of chronic respiratory ailments.

Contaminated Ecosystem: The direct release of hazardous substances into the Kali River has compounded environmental degradation across adjoining rural pockets.

Bharatiya Mazdoor Kisan Union Outlines 4 Core Demands

Addressing their grievances directly to administrative authorities, union representatives met with Additional City Magistrate (ACM) II and submitted a formal memorandum detailing four urgent interventions:

Immediate Factory Shutdowns: Swift closure of all illegally operating industrial plants along the Kali River and the registration of formal legal cases against culpable factory owners.

Full Financial Compensation: Prompt assessment and release of monetary relief to affected cultivators whose standing crops were destroyed by toxic discharge.

Infrastructure Relief: Construction of a bridge over the Kali River to resolve persistent transportation bottlenecks faced by residents of Bhagosa and surrounding hamlets.

Healthcare Infrastructure: Establishment of a fully equipped Primary Health Centre (PHC) in the village to manage escalating pollution-related medical emergencies.

Union representatives cautioned that if the district administration fails to initiate decisive ground action and hold polluters accountable, the farming community will escalate their agitation into a broader, district-wide movement.
