Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has bolstered its senior police leadership with a key administrative elevation. Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Ashok Kumar Singh, belonging to the 1995 batch, has been officially promoted to the prestigious rank of Director General (DG). Following formal approval from the state Governor, the Department of Home released the promotion order, marking a significant milestone in the distinguished career of the veteran police officer.

With this high-level promotion, IPS Ashok Kumar Singh assumes the crucial DG rank, successfully filling the vacancy created following the retirement of DG Fire Services Ashok Mutha Jain. Promoted to Pay Matrix Level 16, Singh’s elevation comes on the heels of his inclusion in the national DG panel cleared by the Central Government's Cabinet Appointments Committee in June 2026. Hailing originally from Itahari in Bhabua district, Bihar, Ashok Kumar Singh's path to the upper echelons of the police force is a remarkable story of dedication and academic excellence. After completing his primary education in his native village up to the fifth grade, he secured admission into the prestigious Sainik School in Tilaiya, Jharkhand, where he completed his intermediate studies. Demonstrating a strong aptitude for sciences, he moved to the national capital to earn a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Physics from the renowned Ramjas College, Delhi University, before clearing the civil services examination to join the elite police cadre.
A Stellar Record Across State and Central Postings
Over a career spanning decades, IPS Ashok Kumar Singh has served in numerous high-profile and sensitive capacities across Uttar Pradesh, earning widespread acclaim for his uncompromising stance on law and order during his stints as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and Superintendent of Police (SP) in multiple districts. Following his promotion from Inspector General (IG) to Additional Director General (ADG) in 2019, Singh also completed a vital central deputation tenure spanning nearly seven years, during which he managed critical responsibilities under the Union Government.
